Organotin compounds (OTs) were used in antifouling paints for more than four decades. However, due to their widespread intensive use and high toxicity, undesirable effects in non-target marine organisms have been detected since the early 1980s. Consequently, the International Maritime Organization banned new maritime applications of these products on January 1, 2003 and their presence on ship hulls from January 1, 2008. Although extensively studied in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia, environmental levels and effects of organotin contamination are still poorly known for South America. Thus, the current review aimed to present the actual status of this problem in South America by summarizing and comparing the available data in the literature. An overview of the OTs concentrations in sediment and biota and their effects, mainly imposex in marine gastropods, are presented. This work showed that in Atlantic coastal areas of South America there are "hot spots" of OTs contamination, similar to that observed in industrialized countries of Northern Hemisphere. On the other hand, the number of accomplished studies in the Pacific coast is extremely low. Despite the limitation on studies about OTs environmental levels and their related effects, the available data pointed out for a widespread TBT contamination along the South American coastal areas. Therefore, the establishment of baselines of organotin contamination in the Pacific coast and the implementation of temporal trend studies in the South American coastal areas is crucial to verify the effectiveness of local regulations and OTs global ban, and to map the most sensitive areas related to present and future antifouling impacts.

Imposex in Voluta musica (Caenogastropoda: Volutidae) from Northeastern Península de Araya, Venezuela. Voluta musica is a dioecious marine gastropod endemic of the South Caribbean. Tributyltin (TBT) and copper (Cu) are potential inducers of imposex, an endocrine disorder by which females develop a penis and/or vas deferens. The goal of this work was to determine the imposex incidence in V. musica populations from Northeastern Península de Araya. For this, we selected three sites (Isla Caribe, Isla Lobos and Bajo Cuspe) and made monthly samplings of 15 snails in each site, during one year, and determined: (1) sizes; (2) sex and imposex incidence and (3) the Relative Penis Length Index (RPLI). We also performed histological analysis of the gonads, and measured TBT and Cu concentrations in sediments from the studied localities. Our results showed that the total number of sampled females affected by imposex was 24.5% at Isla Caribe, 12% at Isla Lobos, and none at Bajo Cuspe. In sediments, Cu was detected mostly in Isla Lobos. The female gonads with imposex did not show any development of male cells in any of the sampled sites. The higher percentage of females with imposex matched with the higher boat traffic locality, and higher TBT level (Isla Caribe). No esterilization was evident in this work, nevertheless, the presence of TBT and Cu in the sediments and females with imposex were considered as a potential threat to V. musica populations in this region. In Venezuela there is no control over this particular issue, possibly because of the lack of information and research in this topic, but certainly, this information will be useful in biodiversity conservation policies. ABSTRACT. Imposex syndrome is the superimposition of a pseudopenis and vas deferens in the reproductive system of female gastropods. This anomalous virilization is attributed to a hormonal imbalance induced by tributyltin (TBT), an organotin compound, present in antifouling paints. This study analyzes the severity, extent, degree and indices of imposex in a population of Thaisella chocolata from Caldera Bay, Atacama Region, Chile. Sex was determined by biopsy of the gonad from 180 specimens and imposex by the concurrence of ovarian, capsule gland, vas deferens and pseudopenis in abnormal females. The proportion of females affected with imposex was estimated using the formula described by Gibbs et al. (1987). The degree of the syndrome progress was classified using five scales of imposex and Vas Deferens Sequence Index (VDSI), Relative Penis Index (RPSI) and Relative Penis Size Index (RPSI) were calculated. Results show that 100% of the females of T. chocolata from Caldera Bay suffer imposex. Macroscopic analysis revealed atrophy of the vagina and femenine glands. Some females lacked ingestive gland and seminal receptacle. Cytological disorders as modification of internal epithelium, occurrence of acellular areas, lack of basal lamina and presence of pyknotic nuclei, and overlapping of prostate tissue in the three females' glands were found. Anatomical and histological alterations associated with imposex determine the absolute sterility of female. The syndrome reached maximum degrees in all scales except for that of Barreiro et al. (2001). It is recommended the use of VDSI for T. chocolata, since provides a realistic measure of the virilization and reproductive potential of the females and would not be affected by the shape and size of the penis.
