Morphological changes in hind limb muscles elicited by adjuvant‐induced arthritis of the rat knee

Abstract: We investigated qualitative and quantitative changes in rat hind limb muscles caused by complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced knee joint pain. One week after CFA injection, muscle atrophy was induced only on the CFA-injected side. Wet weight of the rectus femoris (RF) and soleus (SOL) muscles were significantly decreased by 20% and 19%, respectively. The reduction in cross-sectional areas by CFA was similar for fast and slow muscle fibers in the RF (10% vs 15%, respectively) and SOL muscles (16% vs 16%, res… Show more

“…In arthritis, WBCs are elevated due to amplification of the IL-1β level. We have also observed increase in the level of ESR due to initiation of production of endogenous proteins (e.g., fibrinogen and α/β globulin), which also contributes to the progression of disease [21,22]. CFA-induced arthritic rats showed decreased levels of Hb due to destruction of premature RBCs and slow response of bone marrow erythropoietin.…”

“…There are some reports evaluating muscle atrophy in murine models of arthritis. Ozawa et al demonstrated reduction about 20 % in skeletal muscle and in muscle weight in a model adjuvant‐induced arthritis (complete Freund's adjuvant, CFA). Hartog et al have described reduced weight and spontaneous locomotion in collagen‐induced arthritis (CIA), demonstrating generalized muscle loss.…”

“…A previous study reported that the weight of the limb muscle was decreased in complete Freund's adjuvant‐induced arthritic rats. Additionally, the cross‐sectional area of the muscle of the affected limb was smaller than that of the saline‐injected side in these animals, indicating that joint pathology may induce peri‐articular muscle adaptation . Oner and colleagues and Griggs et al.…”
