Morphological and Ribosomal DNA‐based Characterization of Six Antarctic Ciliate Morphospecies from the Amundsen Sea with Phylogenetic Analyses

Abstract: We characterized six tintinnid ciliates from Antarctic waters using molecular markers and morphological traits: Amphorellopsis quinquealata, Codonellopsis gaussi, Cymatocylis convallaria, Cy. calyciformis, Cy. drygalskii, and Laackmanniella prolongata. The 100% similarity in SSU-ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2-partial LSU rDNA sequences among Cy. convallaria, Cy. calyciformis, and Cy. drygalskii is supportive of synonymy. Codonellopsis gaussi and L. prolongata also showed high levels of similarity in SSU rDNA (99.83%) and… Show more

“…Among these suspected polymorphs are Parafavella spp (Burkovsky 1973;Davis 1978) of which five are reported here (see Supplementary data file). The phenomenon of cryptic species in tintinnids (that is, Santoferrara et al, 2015) may be less common compared with polymorphism as there are species known to display different lorica morphologies, but of the same LOD, previously described as different species and/or genera (that is, Laval-Peuto, 1983; Kim et al, 2013;Bachy et al, 2012). At present it is not clear which phenomenon is more common.…”

“…Although oceanographic surveys have been conducted in the Amundsen Sea, ecological studies of plankton have concentrated on primary production, ciliates, mesozooplankton, and krill Fragoso and Smith, 2012;Lee et al, 2012Lee et al, , 2013. Three studies on ciliates have focused on the species composition, morphology, and phylogeny of ciliates Kim et al, 2013;Jiang et al, 2014).…”

“…Species of certain tintinnid genera are known to display different lorica morphologies (e.g. Laval-Peuto 1983;Bachy et al 2013;Kim et al 2013;Santoferrara et al 2015). However, only a few of the species encountered in this study appeared variable and may or may not represent single species (e.g.…”
