Among the highly fragrant rose species, R. centifolia and R. gruss an teplitz have high commercial importance and value added potential. Most of the modern roses are the result of hybridization, selection and spontaneous mutation. For floriculture trade, there is always demand and necessity for new varieties due to change in taste and fashion. Mutation breeding is an established method for crop improvement. Mutant lines were taken from the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory of Department of Horticulture, PMAS-Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi. Rose genotypes mutants were sown in the field at similar conditions of irrigation, fertilizers and pest/disease management. Plants were treated with different levels of gamma rays and colchicine through solution. Data of various parameters like plant height shoot length, fresh leaf weight, dry leaf weight, flower diameter, rose water, number of shoots, number of flowers/plant/week, weight/10 flowers and number of petals were collected for different treatments. Gamma radiations show greater improvement in R. centifolia but colchicine impact was more on R. gruss an teplitz.

Abstract.-Rosa damascena Mill. is used for essential oil production in many regions in the world. Surveys conducted in Lebanon showed that Lebanese people still widely use R. damascena in its multiple varieties to produce rose water. In this study seven cultivars of R. damascena growing in different ecosystems were collected from several regions in Lebanon. The oil has been extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry GC/MS and gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionizing detector GC/FID. The investigated factors were cultural practices, taxonomical and ecological characters. We report the differences in the identified components. The study shows quantitative and qualitative differences between all samples and those of oils from other countries. This is the first report on the chemical composition of R. damascena growing in Lebanon.Key words : Rosa damascena Mill. -Rosaceae -essential oil -Lebanon -chemical composition.Résumé.-Les fleurs de Rosa damascena Mill. sont utilisées pour la production d'huile essentielle dans de nombreuses régions du monde. Des enquêtes menées au Liban ont montré que les Libanais utilisent largement la rose de Damas dans ses multiples variétés pour produire l'eau de rose. Dans cette étude, sept échantillons de R. damascena poussant dans différents écosys-tèmes ont été cueillis de plusieurs régions du Liban. L'huile essentielle a été extraite par hydrodistillation et analysée par chromatographie en phase gazeuse couplée à la spectrométrie de masse GC/MS et par chromatographie en phase gazeuse munie d'un détecteur à ionisation de flamme GC/FID. Les facteurs étudiés étaient: les pratiques culturales et les caractères taxonomiques et écologiques. Dans ce travail nous rapportons les différences dans les composés identifiés. L'étude a montré des différences quantitatives et qualitatives entre tous les échantillons et ceux des huiles provenant de différents pays. Il s'agit du premier rapport publié sur la composition chimique de cette huile essentielle au Liban.Mots clés : Rosa damascena Mill. -Rosaceae -huile essentielle -Liban -composition chimique.

Rosa damascenaMill that is one of the important species of Rosa is used for essential oil production. It is a tetraploid rose that belongs to Damask group of roses. It is generally thought that the R. damascena originated in the Neo-lithic period, in South Anatolia, as a hybridization of R. gallica and R. phoenicea. Nevertheless, the origin of R. damascena is a bone of contention throughout the world. So far, 400 volatile substances have been identified in rose oil. Besides its application in aromatic and food industries, some valuable characteristics of Damask rose oil such as anti -HIV, antibacterial and antioxidant activities have been established during last two decades. The demand of rose oil in international market is increasing, but the area of production is stagnant. Thus, there is a pressing need to extend the cultivation of R. damascena to larger area and to improve its production technology. Rosa damascena possesses vast diversity in plant habit and flower characteristics. Over all, the research publication on this crop is scarce compared to other crops. Hence, this review will provide the valuable information for further research and understanding of the crop and its value as an economical crop.
