Morphological and Morphometric Study of the Development of Seminiferous Epithelium of Donkey (Equus asinus) from Birth to Maturity

Abstract: In this investigation, testes of 20 donkeys ranging from birth to maturity were studied. The postnatal morphologic and morphometric characteristics of donkey's seminiferous epithelium during the postnatal period were studied. The volume percentage of the tubular compartment (Seminiferous tubules) was about 12.76% in neonates, progressively increased with postnatal age, reaching about 78.42% of the testicular parenchyma in mature donkeys. The seminiferous tubules measured about 205 μm in diameter, and their lin… Show more

“…All fish were anesthetized using benzocaine (4 mg/L) and decapitated. Four 1 cm 3 samples were taken for light microscopy examination and fixed in Wrobel‐Mustafa fixative for 24 h (Abd‐Elhafeez, Moustafa, Zayed, & Ramadan, 2017; Abd‐Elhafeez, Moustafa, Zayed, & Sayed, 2017; Mnk, 2015; Wrobel & Moustafa, 2000). The remaining four samples were prepared as semi‐thin and ultrathin samples for use in transmission electron microscopic examination and fixed with Karnovsky (1965) fixative.…”

“…Then, selected gills were fixed in the Wrobel and Moustafa fixative (Wrobel & Moustafa, 2000). Next, the samples were fixed in three 70% ethanol washes, each lasting 24 h, cleared in methyl benzoate, and embedded them in paraffin for 8 h (Abd‐Elhafeez, Ae, & Sayed, 2017; Abd‐Elhafeez, Moustafa, et al, 2017; Moustafa et al, 2015). Serial, 5 μm cross‐sections and longitudinal sections were generated using an RM2125 Microtome (Richert‐Leica, Germany).…”

“…The testis is the important dual glandular organ of the male reproductive system, with exocrine and endocrine components (Houssou et al, 2021). Its exocrine function is to produce male sex cells; meanwhile, its endocrine function is mainly focused on producing male sex hormone (Moustafa, Sayed, Zayed, & Abd El-Hafeez, 2015). Testis biometric parameters are very important for the development of assisted reproductive protocols in different species (Houssou et al, 2021).…”
