Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Oscheius saproxylicus sp. n. (Rhabditida, Rhabditidae) From Decaying Wood in Spain, With New Insights into the Phylogeny of the Genus and a Revision of its Taxonomy

Abstract: A new species of the genus Oscheius, O. saproxylicus sp. n., collected in decaying wood obtained from an orchard in Southern Iberian Peninsula, is reported. A detailed description, including morphometrics, LM and SEM images, and molecular (18S and 28S rDNA genes) information is provided. The female is characterized by a moderately long body, lateral field with three longitudinal ridges, midbody vulva, and conical tail with acute tip. It was distinguished from its closest relative, O. dolichura, by a shorter ta… Show more

“…Compared to the other LSU sequence assigned to O. myriophilus (MK418537), the newly generated LSU sequences had remarkable differences (2 gaps and 13 indels), thus the identity of this sequence needs further validations. The presently resolved SSU phylogeny, is similar to the resolved tree by Abolafia and Peña-Santiago (2019) , corroborating members of the Insectivorus-group and Dolichura-group form monophyletic groups, both of which forming the monophyletic genus Oscheius (based on currently available data). The similar pattern was also observed in LSU phylogeny.…”

“…It is mainly characterized by a short buccal tube about as long as wide, and absence of median pharyngeal swelling. Abolafia and Peña-Santiago (2019) presented an excellent revision on taxonomy and phylogeny of the genus, discussed on its valid subgenera and intragenus grouping of the valid species. After the SSU and LSU phylogenetic trees in their study, the genus seems to be monophyletic based on both markers.…”
