Spiked pepper (Piper aduncum) essential oil has the potency to develop as a botanical insecticide in controlling fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). This study aimed to determine the activity of spiked pepper fruit essential oils against fall armyworm larvae. This study was held from November 2020 to March 2021 at the Insect Bioecology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, West Sumatera, Indonesia. The experiment used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), including preliminary and advanced tests. The preliminary test was conducted using three concentration levels (0%, 0.25%, and 0.5%) and consisted of 4 replications. The advanced test was conducted using 5 concentration levels and control (0%, 0.05%, 0.07%, 0.11%, 0.17% and 0.25%) and consisted of 5 replications. The test ran with the leaf-dipped method, with parameters observed were larval mortality, feeding inhibition activity (antifeedant), and larval development time. The observation data were analyzed using analysis of variance, and if there were any significant differences, it continued with a further test using Least Significant Difference (LSD) at a 5% level. LC50 and LC95 values were analyzed using the POLO PC software. The result showed that spiked pepper fruit essential oil could cause larval mortality, inhibit feeding activity, and inhibit Fall armyworm larval growth. The treatment with a concentration of 0.17% showed the best result, which could lead to 98.67% larvae mortality, inhibit feeding activity by 91.23% and inhibit larvae growth from reaching the sixth instar around 3.26 days compared to the control. The LC50 and LC95 value of spiked pepper fruit essential oil solution was 0.068% and 0.151%, respectively. Overall, spiked pepper essential oil has insecticidal activity against fall armyworm larvae.

Alabama argillacea (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is a cotton pest. It is considered the most important defoliator species. It is commonly controlled using non-selective synthetic insecticides. However, they cause adverse effects to the environment. Thus, there is a need for more sustainable forms of management. In this case, essential oils may be a promising alternative. They have proven effects against countless agricultural pests. However, there is still few information on the effects of essential oils against A. argillacea. The present work aims to evaluate the deterrent activity of essential oils of Mentha spicata, Litsea cubeba, Melaleuca alternifolia and Juniperus virginiana on the oviposition of A. argillacea and identify which compounds of these oils are responsible for this action. Oviposition bioassays were performed to test oils. Gas chromatography coupled with electroantennography (GC-EAD) was performed to identify constituents detected by A. argillacea. In oviposition bioassays, only the oil of M. spicata showed activity against A. argillacea. GC-EAD analyses of this oil revealed that three compounds elicited visible antennal responses, namely, limonene, carvone and (E)-β-caryophyllene. Bioassays testing these three compounds showed that only limonene elicited oviposition deterrence against A. argillacea. Hence, the findings suggest that the essential oil of M. spicata and, more specially, limonene may contribute to a more sustainable management of this important pest of cotton.

BACKGROUND: Sitophilus zeamais is one of the most economically impactful pests, attacking various grains and processed foods. Control of this insect has been achieved using synthetic insecticides, exacerbated and careless use of which has led to the development of resistant insect populations, toxicity to non-target organisms and environmental contamination. In this study, Piper corcovadensis leaf essential oil (PcLEO) and its major compound, 1-butyl-3,4-methylenedioxybenzene (BMDB), were investigated as alternative insecticidal agents against S. zeamais.RESULTS: Characterization of PcLEO showed the presence of 40 compounds. The major components were the phenylpropanoid BMDB (35.77%) and the monoterpenes ⊍-pinene (14.95%) and terpinolene (6.23%). PcLEO and BMDB were toxic by fumigation (half-maximal lethal concentration [LC 50 ]: 9.46 and 0.85 ∼l L -1 of air, respectively), by contact (half-maximal lethal dose [LD 50 ]: 9.38 and 6.16 ∼g g -1 of insect, respectively) and ingestion (LC 50 : 16.04 and 14.30 mg g -1 , respectively). In the ingestion test, both PcLEO and BMDB promoted the loss of insect biomass and had a strong deterrent effect. In addition, both were able to inhibit trypsin and ⊍-amylase activities.CONCLUSION: PcLEO and BMDB exhibited insecticidal activity against S. zeamais, with a toxic effect by fumigation, contact and ingestion, in addition to food deterrence and inhibiting trypsin and ⊍-amylase activities, suggesting their potential for use in the control of this pest.
