“…While it can be argued that the mucosa surrounding colorectal carcinomas is far from normal , there have been a number of observations of genetic lesions, especially in KRAS , in the apparently phenotypically‐normal mucosa from excision specimens . Similarly, the DNA repair gene O 6 ‐methylguanine‐DNA methyltransferase ( MGMT ) is frequently methylated in colorectal cancer, and fields of MGMT promoter methylation were seen in sporadic colorectal cancer as well as in the paired, apparently normal, colonic mucosa, showing near‐identical patterns of methylation associated with an increased incidence of KRAS mutations .…”
