Morphologic and histologic abnormalities in female and male rats treated with anabolic steroids

Abstract: A two-part study was performed to determine the effects of high doses of anabolic steroids on weight, appetite, and organ histology. Initially, 30 white Wistar rats, 15 males and 15 females, were treated weekly with either 0.52 cc of physiologic saline or nandrolone decanoate. After 6 weeks, female treated and control rats had comparable weight gains, but male treated rats were significantly lighter than controls. Rats were sacrificed and organs dissected for histologic preparation. Treated male livers had les… Show more

“…However, observed that the liver weight of ND administered rats was lower as compared to control groups at the sixth week of the ND application [17]. In the another [18] study, the decrement of relative liver weight of ND administered rats was consistent with the observation of other research who suggested that this decrement may be due to the type of anabolic steroid, the form and duration of administration of the drug [17].…”

“…Some athletes (and non-athletes) abuse steroids in order to increase their muscular mass, power, and endurance [2]. The side effects of anabolic steroids on the physiology and function of the reproductive system have been proved [3]. The side effects of steroids on the histology of testis [4], prostate [5], ovary, and uterus [6][7], spermatogenesis [8], genitalia malformation, and ovarian cyclical activity [1,[9][10][11] have also been shown.…”

“…The AS influence on body mass is still very argued in the literature. In previous investigations, Yu-Yahiro et al (17) , showed reduction in body mass in rats treated with AS, being it associated with appetite decrease in these animals. On the other hand, other authors have not observed differences in rats treated with AS (18) .…”
