Morphologic and Clinical Effects of Subretinal Injection of Indocyanine Green and Infracyanine Green in Rabbits

Abstract: Subretinal injection of 0.05% ICG results in more significant retinal damage than 0.5% IfCG. In this model, iodine-free IfCG demonstrates a safer profile than a tenfold lower concentration of ICG, which contains iodine in its composition.

“…One of the new tools of vitrectomy are substances capable of dyeing the structures intraocular facilitating visibility. Some dyes have been well studied as indocyanine green (ICG), trypan blue and more recently the sodium fluorescein (6)(7)(8)(9)(10) .…”

“…Toxicological studies have been carried out in rabbits for different purposes: to evaluate the morphological and clinical effects on the retina after subretinal injection of drugs [14,[74][75][76][77][78] , for the treatment or prevention of endophthalmitis with antibiotics [79] or antifungal agents [80,81] , and for the prevention of tractional retinal detachment in an experimental model of proliferative vitreoretinopathy treated with intravitreal implants loaded with daunomycin [79,82] or a combination of triamcinolone acetonide and 5-fluorouracil [83] .…”
