Morpho-Physiological and Stress-Related Gene Expression of Rice Varieties in Response to Salinity Stress at Early Vegetative Stage

Abstract: This study focuses on the growth and morpho-physiological responses of the Malaysian commercial variety MR219 rice to salinity stress during the early vegetative stages, specifically during germination and the five-leaf stage. For germination responses, MR219 seeds were grown for 10 days in different salt concentrations. Low salinity significantly improves seed germination and increases the total number of germinated seeds. However, higher salinity (160 mM NaCl) inhibits the germination of MR219 seeds and redu… Show more

“…Rice is a very important cereal crop that feeds half of the world's population and is particularly sensitive to salt stress [ 38 ]. There have been many studies on salt-tolerant transgenic rice, most of which were based on research into homologous species and gene families to identify the genes that change the salt response of rice [ 39 41 ]. Prior to the current study, the OsDUF6 gene had no known function.…”

“…This activity will cause an impediment to vital processes like the photosynthesis of plants by declining photosynthetic efficiency as well as lead to incomplete inflorescence (Boyes et al, 2001;. The reduction of relative chlorophyll content in atsap2 was recorded and this is possibly associated with the loss-of-function of the gene and contributes to the rapid oxidative damage in the chloroplast and lipid membrane peroxidation of thylakoids (Kaur et al, 2019;Sharma et al, 2020b;Shakri et al, 2022). However, unlike OsSAP8, the overexpression of the gene results in a maintained level of relative chlorophyll content in response to both stresses.…”
