“…The sample size of 12 was calculated using the formula (Z α /2 − Z) 2 σ 2 /( μ 1 − μ 2 ) 2 , 20 where α is the level of significance (0.05), β the power (0.80), σ 2 the estimated variance, and μ 1 − μ 2 the greatest difference between the first and second 30 min‐distension considered acceptable. The estimates of σ 2 and μ 1 − μ 2 were based on data obtained in 24 healthy subjects using this type of distension 18,19 and pharmacological studies of transient LOS relaxations in healthy subjects 21–25 .
