Morning Heart Rate Variability as an Indication of Fatigue Status in Badminton Players during a Training Camp

Abstract: This study aimed to clarify whether changes in the fatigue status of elite athletes during a precompetition period could be evaluated using morning heart rate variability (HRV) indices. Eight Japanese National Badminton Team players (age, 23.0 ± 2.8 years) participated in this study. HRV and subjective fatigue were measured during the first (days 1–4: Phase 1) and the second half (days 5–8: Phase 2) of an 8-day national team training camp. The global and parasympathetic HRV indices were as follows: standard de… Show more

“…Standard deviation of RR-intervals (SDNN) decreased in the group of analytic participants throughout the experiment. Such SDNN dynamics in combination with constant averaged heart rate is usually related to a decrease in individual energy levels due to experiencing light fatigue (Boneva et al, 2007;Iizuka et al, 2020). This is also supported by the fact that analytic participants solved the tasks slower, suggesting higher cognitive effort.…”

“…There was a significant difference in the value of RMSSD in chronic SCI patients from supine to sitting position from this study. The RMSSD value describes the parasympathetic modulation of the heart (20).…”

“…Examination of HRV to evaluate cardiac parasympathetic nervous activity, alone or in combination with sympathetic nervous activity, is effective for objectively monitoring the fatigue status of athletes [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. A decrease in parasympathetic HRV indices reflects an increased fatigue status in athletes [ 6 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Iizuka et al [ 12 ] reported that changes in fatigue status of elite badminton players significantly correlated with changes in parasympathetic HRV indices.…”

Iizuka et al [ 12 ] reported that changes in fatigue status of elite badminton players significantly correlated with changes in parasympathetic HRV indices. Naranjo et al [ 13 ] reported lower parasympathetic HRV values and higher fatigue in professional soccer players during the final phase of the competition season.…”
