More than One Borderline? The Current Status of the Concept of Borderline Personality

Abstract: Borderline Personality has acquired diagnostic respectability with its inclusion in DSM III. Descriptions of the syndrome by the major contributors to the field are reviewed and the criteria developed by Spitzer, Endicott and Gibbon (1979), and adopted for DSM III, are discussed. It is suggested that there may be an identifiable sub-group of patients with Borderline Personality Disorder who are best classified with the affective disorders.
