More than meets the eye: Longitudinal visual system neurodevelopment in very preterm children and anophthalmia

Abstract: Highlights Longitudinal DTI data were collected in very preterm (VPT) and full-term children. We found disruptions in the posterior visual system of the VPT children. Early life maturational deficits were found in an anophthalmic VPT child. Preterm birth and monocular vision jointly impact neuroanatomical development. Between birth and 8yrs of age, considerable compensatory mechanisms are evident.
