More Than Meets the Eye: a Case of Synchronous Ipsilateral Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma and Urothelial Carcinoma of the Pelvicalyceal System

Abstract: Background: The synchronous occurrence of renal cell carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma of the renal pelvis in the same kidney is extremely rare, although previously reported. To our knowledge, we present the youngest patient recorded in the literature, with this histology combination presenting synchronously in the same kidney, and the first report in active duty military personnel.Case presentation: An otherwise healthy 43-year-old military male with the chief complaint of left plank pain was seen in the off… Show more

“…Radiologic findings are not definitive in the differential diagnosis, and a biopsy should be performed if there is a high suspicion. Especially in cases of hematuria, a suspicion of urothelial carcinoma or a coexistence of RCC with urothelial carcinoma should be suspected [ 34 ]. Nephron-sparing techniques, such as ablation and partial nephrectomy, should be performed in these patients, as most of these patients are young, and renal endometriosis is a benign disease.…”

“…Patients with papillary RCC combined with UCC had a shorter history of ~1 month, with the average maximum diameter of the kidney tumor being ~2 cm and the average maximum diameter of the ureteral tumor being ~2 cm. Patients with clear cell RCC combined with UUC had the second longest history, ~2 months, with an average maximum diameter of ~3 cm for renal tumours and 4 cm for ureteral tumours; patients with CRCC combined with UCC had a longer history, >3 months on average, with an average maximum diameter of ~4 cm for renal tumours and 5 cm for ureteral tumours (Table I) (12)(13)(14)(15)(16). Although the early symptoms of simple kidney cancer are not obvious, and even ~50% of the patients have no discomfort (17).…”
