The Loess Plateau is considered one of the world's regions with severe soil erosion. Grasslands are widely distributed on the Loess Plateau, accounting for approximately 40% of the total area.Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays an important role in the terrestrial carbon cycle in this region.We compiled more than 1,000 measurements of plant biomass and SOC content derived from 223 field studies of grasslands on the Loess Plateau. Combined with meteorological factors (precipitation and air temperature) and the photosynthetically active radiation factor, the topsoil SOC contents of grasslands were predicted using the random forest (RF) regression algorithm. biomass and temperature should receive more attention due to increasing C sequestration.

Artificial grasslands play a role in carbon storage on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. The artificial grasslands exhibit decreased proportions of graminate and increased species richness with age. However, the effect of the graminate proportions and species richness on ecosystem C stocks in artificial grasslands have not been elucidated. We conducted an in situ13C pulse-labeling experiment in August 2012 using artificial grasslands that had been established for two years (2Y), five years (5Y), and twelve years (12Y). Each region was plowed fallow from severely degraded alpine meadow in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The 12Y grassland had moderate proportions of graminate and the highest species richness. This region showed more recovered 13C in soil and a longer mean residence time, which suggests species richness controls the ecosystem C stock. The loss rate of leaf-assimilated C of the graminate-dominant plant species Elymus nutans in artificial grasslands of different ages was lowest in the 12Y grassland, which also had the highest species richness. Thus the lower loss rate of leaf-assimilated C can be partially responsible for the larger ecosystem carbon stocks in the 12Y grassland. This finding is a novel mechanism for the effects of species richness on the increase in ecosystem functioning.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a major role in maintaining long‐term ecological stability. This paper focuses on how land use conversion affects the stability of SOC (e.g., carbon [C] molecular structure) and how soil C cycle‐related enzyme activities are involved in the process. Four land use types around the southern margin of Qinghai Lake were researched: lakeside wetland, natural grassland, cropland, and restored grassland. Soil C was dominated by O‐alkyl carbon (O‐alkyl C, 40.6%–49.3% of total intensity) and alkyl carbon (alkyl C 25.9%–36.7%) in all land use types. Alkyl C and aliphaticity were more abundant in lakeside wetlands than in the other land use types; these values decreased by 29.5% and 36.0%, respectively, after lakeside wetland reclamation. Compared with cropland, restored grassland had higher dissolved organic carbon and β‐glucosidase activity, mainly attributed to the higher plant residues left in the topsoil that provided the polysaccharides required for the higher β‐glucosidase activity. The SOC, labile carbon, alkyl C, and aliphaticity together explained more than 50% of the total variability of soil enzyme activities (p < 0.05) by redundancy analysis, and β‐glucosidase played a regulatory role in soil carbon conversion by path analysis. The lakeside wetland had a more stable SOC than the other land use types around Qinghai Lake at the molecular level due to its higher aliphaticity and aromaticity, which are mainly related to oxygen limitations in lakeside wetlands. To some extent, the accumulation of recalcitrant molecules is limited in restored grassland soils.
