More comprehensive 3D modeling of clay‐like material drying

Abstract: Drying process plays an important role in the manufacturing of many products such as ceramic, kitchenware and building materials, some of which have complex three‐dimensional (3D) geometry. To deal with many restrictions found in literatures, a 3D numerical approach was used to describe the drying process of a porous Clay‐like material. The problem investigated involves highly coupled equations considering heat, mass, and mechanical aspects. The model is validated through the comparison of experimental measure… Show more

“…Katekawa and Silva presented a comprehensive review that summarizes various modeling strategies that account for drying-induced shrinkage. Some contributions employ solid mechanics models to calculate body shrinkage through strain–stress relationships. , Borgman and Holtzman used a pore-network model to investigate the solid matrix deformations during drying and the effect of shrinkage on the drying patterns and rates. More recently, Arvanitidis et al developed a model, based on the shrinkage velocity approach, to study the impact of shrinkage on the drying kinetics of a ceramic tile.…”

“…A secagem deve ser feita com um rígido controle do processo, pois, se realizada de maneira incorreta danos estruturais como, deformações, trincas e empenamentos podem ocorrer e, consequentemente, uma grande perda de produtos (Heydari et al, 2018). Em geral, os desperdícios que hoje ocorrem na indústria da cerâmica vermelha, são da ordem de 30% (Coelho, 2009).…”

“…Crack formation in ceramic drying has been also studied [11]. The majority of works have been subjected to slabs, cylinders, and other simple configurations; but recently, a comprehensive modeling has been also developed for 3D material [12]. Furthermore, needs of ceramic thin film are increasing for industrial application in fields of fine ceramics like electronic circuit boards, thin film coating, electronic devices, etc.…”
