“…However, results suggest that defeatism coping behaviors (such as substance use and denial) may be an important mediator in the relationship between resilient mental functioning and five of the six psychological well-being outcomes (environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations, purpose in life, and self-acceptance). These results support the findings of Moritz et al (2016) who reported a relationship between maladaptive coping behaviors and psychopathology. Moritz et al also acknowledged that it is not only the increase of active coping behaviors that could benefit psychological well-being but also the decrease in maladaptive coping behaviors.…”

“…For example, the three domains of coping described refer to specific types of engagement and disengagement coping, but are not inherently classified as adaptive or maladaptive forms of responding to stress. Some studies indicate that adaptive strategies for stress include behaviors such as problem-solving and social support (Chua et al 2015), or relaxation and acceptance (Moritz et al 2016), while maladaptive coping behaviors include rumination, denying the situation, engaging in distracting activities (Chua et al 2015; Moritz et al 2016) and engaging in behavioral avoidance through emotional discharge like yelling to let off steam (Elliot et al 2011). In these studies, however, there have been exceptions where strategies assumed to be maladaptive (i.e., keeping emotional reactions inside) have been associated with resilience, indicating that further research is needed to determine the circumstances under which problem-focused, positive emotion-focused, and negative emotion-focused coping are adaptive vs. maladaptive.…”

“…Prior cross‐sectional studies that assessed ER with questionnaires in non‐clinical controls have shown that subclinical paranoia is associated with the use of maladaptive ER strategies (thought suppression: Jones & Fernyhough, ; general maladaptive coping: Moritz et al ., ; impulse control difficulties: Westermann & Lincoln, ). In line with these findings, patients with psychosis were found to present more maladaptive ER strategies in comparison with controls (Moritz et al ., ).…”
