Morbidity and mortality due to shigella and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli diarrhoea: the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990–2016

Abstract: SummaryBackgroundShigella and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) are bacterial pathogens that are frequently associated with diarrhoeal disease, and are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors study 2016 (GBD 2016) is a systematic, scientific effort to quantify the morbidity and mortality due to over 300 causes of death and disability. We aimed to analyse the global burden of shigella and ETEC diarrhoea according to age, sex, geog… Show more

“…Shigella is the causative agent of bacillary dysentery (also called shigellosis), resulting from invasion of the intestinal epithelium and leading to ∼164,000 deaths annually [1, 2]. Shigella is also recognised by the World Health Organization as a priority pathogen exhibiting antimicrobial resistance [3, 4].…”

“…Shigella flexneri and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) are two major bacterial pathogens responsible for substantial burdens of diarrhea in children from developing countries 1,2 . Together they were responsible for more than 250,000 deaths in 2016 and about 20% of diarrhea deaths worldwide 3 .…”

“…Shigella flexneri is a causative agent of intestinal infections worldwide, with 270 million cases per year, including more than 200,000 deaths (Khalil et al, ). The pathogenic properties of S. flexneri rely on its ability to invade the human colon where it spreads from cell to cell (Agaisse, ; Takeuchi, Formal, & Sprinz, ).…”
