Aim:The study determines moral distress and related factors among emergency nurses. Moral distress is one of the recurring issues in the nursing profession that has gained importance by creating changes in the health care system. Materials and Methods:An analytic-descriptive study was conducted, in which all 180 nurses working in emergency education and health centers in were included. Moral distress was measured by questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS 17. Results:The findings showed that moral distress in emergency nurses (4.93±1.08) was high. Most moral distress was in the area of professional-functional competence (5.21±1.17) in the item of "unsafe conditions" (5.55±1.45). No statistically significant correlation was found between age and experience with moral distress among nurses in the emergency department. From the perspective of nurses in the study, organizational factors including barriers to education were the strongest factor influencing moral distress. Conclusion:Given that moral distress in nurses participating in the study was very high, it seems that planning to promote professionalfunctional competency of nursing practice are essential.

It is known that ethical issues frequently become the main topic of conversation in psychiatry services. Healthcare professionals, who face ethical problems, seek to overcome them via laws, regulations and institutional legislations. However, these systems are not always influential in solving the problems and moral integrity of the individuals are negatively affected. Moral distress was originally defined as occurring when a healthcare personnel knows the right thing to do, but institutional constraints make it nearly impossible to pursue the right course of action and it is common event in psychiatric field. Moral distress is affected by external (institutional), clinical and individual factors depending on the characteristics of healthcare service system, healthcare personnel and service receiver group. Furthermore, moral distress negatively affects the health, care quality of the healthcare personnel and patient safety. This review has been prepared with a view to drawing attention to the concept of moral distress, which has significant effects on the health of healthcare personnel and service quality, analyzing it specifically in psychiatry field.

Health care providers are expected to have a certain moral sensitivity (MS) to make an ethical assessment. Moral distress (MD) is a common phenomenon in nursing. It can negatively affect nurses physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MD and MS among nurses using a cross‐sectional descriptive design. The study was conducted in two stages. The first stage was a methodological study that analyzed validity and reliability of the Measure of MD—Healthcare Professionals. The second stage was a descriptive‐ predictive analysis that investigated the relationship between MD and MS. The MD intensity and frequency scores of the participants were high and moderately high, respectively. There was no direct effect on the total score and frequency of MS and MD. However, a direct and significant negative effect of MS was seen on the intensity of MD. Based on the results of this study, MS should be considered as a measure in studies aimed at understanding MD among clinical nurses. Empowerment programs should be established to increase the awareness of health workers about ethical and moral situations and to support them to cope with the problems they experience in these areas.
