Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dysmenorrhea, in addition to harming the physical and mental health of women, also disrupt their daily life and quality of life. We aimed to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of Curcuma longa (turmeric) and curcumin on PMS and dysmenorrhea. PRISMA guideline 2020 was followed for conducting this systematic review. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus. Finally, 17 articles were found after considering the study’s inclusion and exclusion criteria into account. Data were extracted and entered into an Excel file for further investigation and drew the results. Curcuma longa and curcumin affect PMS and dysmenorrhea through various mechanisms. They inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and the production of prostaglandins, thus reducing inflammation and pain. Additionally, curcumin’s antioxidant properties protect against oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation helps maintain hormonal balance, exert analgesic effects, and relieve the symptoms of PMS and dysmenorrhea. They also insert neurotransmitter modulatory properties, such as increased serotonin and dopamine levels, which may contribute to their antidepressant, and sedative effects. Curcuma longa and curcumin indicated promising therapeutic effects in reducing PMS and dysmenorrhea symptoms due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Although, further well-designed clinical trials are needed to establish their efficacy and optimal dosage.

The article being reviewed discusses how mood and mental health are influenced by hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. Emotional well-being has been found to be affected by the levels of two hormones, estrogen and progesterone, that vary in a woman's menstrual cycle. It is important to know these details as they will enable many people who have a problem managing their own mental health throughout the month to do so. Furthermore, this study delves into the possible therapeutic roles played by some herbs including Ashoka (Saraca asoca), ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Rhodiola rosea. These plants are used in different cultures for improving health status and recent studies show that they can be beneficial for correcting menstrual related mood disorders. Ashoka is said to have an effect on hormones through its active ingredients. Research has suggested that it might help reduce menstrual pain and emotional stress. An adaptogenic herb called ashwagandha has gained popularity because of its anxiety-reducing properties. Ashwagandha appears like a viable natural remedy since it counteracts stress which worsens moods during menstruation. Rhodiola rosea is among the other adaptogens that is being considered for its ability to modify stress response and enhance mood control. This article evaluates critically scientific literature available, and therefore, integrates what has been established about the efficiency of these drugs and how they work.

Causal relationship between mood swing and gynecological disorders: a Mendelian randomization study

Background Increasing number of observational studies have associated mood instability to common female diseases, but the underlying causal relationship remains unclear. In this work, Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was applied to explore the genetically predicted causal relationship of mood swings and several prevalent gynecological disorders. Methods Instrumental variables (IVs) of mood swings were selected from UK Biobank (UKB), with 204,412 cases and 247,207 controls being incorporated. The genetic variants for female disorders were obtained from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) and FinnGen consortium. To avoid biases caused by racial difference, only European population was included here. Five strong analytical methodologies were used to increase the validity of the results, the most substantial of which was the inverse variance weighting (IVW) method. Pleiotropy, sensitivity, and heterogeneity were assessed to strengthen the findings. Results We found mood swings was significantly positively associated with risk of endometrial cancer (OR = 2.60 [95%CI = 1.36, 4.95], P = 0.0037), cervical cancer (OR = 1.01[95%CI = 1.00,1.02], P = 0.0213) and endometriosis (OR = 2.58 [95%CI = 1.18, 5.60], P = 0.0170) by IVW method. However, there was no causal relationship between mood swing and ovarian cancer. No pleiotropy and heterogeneity existed and sensitivity tests were passed. Conclusion This study reveals genetically predicted causal relationships between mood swing and the risk of endometrial cancer, cervical cancer and endometriosis in European populations through MR analysis, which makes up for observational research's inherent limitations.
