Mood, Activity Participation, and Leisure Engagement Satisfaction (MAPLES): a randomised controlled pilot feasibility trial for low mood in acquired brain injury

Abstract: Background Acquired brain injury (ABI) affects approximately 79.3 million individuals annually and is linked with elevated rates of depression and low mood. Existing methods for treating depression in ABI have shown mixed efficacy. Behavioural activation (BA) is a potentially promising intervention. Its premise is that individuals with low mood avoid planning and engaging in activities due to low expectations of a positive outcome. Consequently, their exposure to positive reinforcement is reduced, exacerbating… Show more

“…For a feasibility trial, it is not necessary to conduct sample size calculations to power the study [ 57 ]. A randomised sample size of n = 60 ( n = 30 per arm) was deemed appropriate for this feasibility study, informed by similar studies in this area [ 58 ] and National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) guidelines [ 59 ]. If enrolment is < 50% (i.e.…”

“…Part 2 aimed to evaluate the internal consistency and factor structure of the IUS-12 in adults with an ABI. For Part 2 only, IUS-12 data collected from the participants recruited as above were combined with data from another study that we had conducted in which participants with ABI had also completed the IUS-12 ( Kusec et al, 2020 ). This was done to prevent model nonconvergence ( MacCallum et al, 1999 ) in an ABI sample.…”

“…After completing a basic demographics form, participants completed the IUS-12 as part of a larger battery of questionnaires used to evaluate IUS-12 validity as in Part 1 above, or as part of the separate research study ( Kusec et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The primary objective of the Mood, Activity Participation, and Leisure Engagement Satisfaction (MAPLES) trial was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of two activity-based group interventions in adults with ABI with low mood and/or activity levels, as per our trial protocol [30]. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed via participant retention from baseline to 1-month postintervention, acceptability of group sessions and assessments, and qualitative interview feedback.…”
