Montreal Cognitive Assessment

Abstract: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was recently proposed as a cognitive screening test for milder forms of cognitive impairment, having surpassed the well-known limitations of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). This study aims to validate the MoCA for screening Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer disease (AD) through an analysis of diagnostic accuracy and the proposal of cut-offs. Patients were classified into 2 clinical groups according to standard criteria: MCI (n=90) and AD (n=90). Th… Show more

“…Studies have demonstrated that the culturally and linguistically adapted versions of the MoCA are superior to the MMSE in screening for MCI [20,28,29], however, due to the differences in Western culture and difficulty in separating the influence of culture from education level, further revision of MoCA adaptations are required to tailor the contents more accurately to local populations across the globe as well as optimizing cut-offs for detecting MCI.…”

“…The 18 older adults (age = 79 ± 3.5, 13 females) that were eventually included for analysis had a score on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) of 26 ± 2.5 on a scale of 0-30. None scored below 22, the threshold for mild cognitive impairment (Freitas, Simões, Alves, & Santana, 2013). Of the 18 young participants tested (age 21 ± 1.2, 7 females), no participants were excluded or replaced.…”

“…It is also accurate in identifying early dementia [15]. The best cut-off score for the MoCA is unclear, with a cut-off of ≥22 shown to improve its sensitivity and specificity for MCI [16] and a cut-off of ≥20 suggested for dementia [17]. Further, it is important that screening tools are statistically robust and demonstrate high sensitivity [18], so that the rates of false negative classifications remain low.…”
