Monthly Patterns of Testosterone and Behavior in Prospective Fathers

Abstract: The individual time patterns of salivary testosterone of adult healthy men, self-reported sexual behavior and their co-occurrence with regular weekly or monthly intervals were studied. Twenty-seven volunteer males (mean age 33 ؎ 1 years) collected daily morning saliva over a period of 90 days. Evening questionnaires provided daily information on sexual activity. From the saliva, testosterone immunoreactive substances were determined using enzyme immunoassay. To detect events in which increases of testosterone … Show more

“…This type of data is commonly acquired during observational behavioral studies, traditionally by manual inspection of animal activities. T-pattern analysis has been used in a wide variety of observational studies, including serum testosterone concentration in prospective fathers (Hirschenhauser et al 2002), stereotypic decision behavior in schizophrenic patients (Lyon et al 1994), mitral cell firing patterns in rat olfactory bulb after presentation of test odors (Nicol et al 2005), cooperative behavior between humans and dogs when constructing an object (Kerepesi et al 2005), and analysis of soccer team play (Borrie et al 2002). The common feature uniting all of the above problems is the need to identify repeated behavior patterns that may irregularly occur within a period of observation.…”

“…The short-term exposure of males to females provokes temporary T concentration increases in both animals [19] and humans [20]. In healthy young men, peaks in salivary T levels coincided with periods of intense sexual activity [21]. Penile and systemic T significantly increases during excitation and erection in both normal [22,23,24,25] and impotent subjects [26].…”

“…Results demonstrated the existence of highly complex feedback patterns in terms of hierarchical organization. Hirschenhauser et al (2002) and Hirschenhauser and Frigerio (2005) published two papers where Theme was used to study patterns in behavior and hormone levels. Monthly patterns of testosterone and behavior in prospective fathers were analyzed.…”
