Montelukast Added to Inhaled Beclomethasone in Treatment of Asthma

Abstract: The primary objective of this study was to determine whether montelukast, an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist, provides additional clinical benefit to the effect of inhaled corticosteroids. A total of 642 patients with chronic asthma (FEV(1) 50 to 85% of predicted value and at least a predefined level of asthma symptoms) incompletely controlled with inhaled beclomethasone, 200 microg twice daily using a spacer device, during the 4-wk run-in period were randomly allocated, in a double-blind, double-dummy ma… Show more

“…12,13 In fact, in a recent study of adults with chronic asthma, montelukast provided additional asthma control to patients benefiting from, but incompletely controlled on, inhaled beclomethasone. 19 Of note, there are few randomized controlled studies of asthma therapies for preschool children. This may be partly because clinical end points are difficult to measure in this patient population and symptom burden and ␤-agonist use in children is less than that seen in adults.…”

“…1 Another RCT in adults also showed a treatment benefit after 16 weeks of beclomethasone plus montelukast. 2 For safety, caution is always needed when using tablets in young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that safe swallowing can be difficult for young children for reasons of anatomy, experience, and judgment.…”
