Monte Carlo Simulator and Ancillary Response Generator of Suzaku XRT/XIS System for Spatially Extended Source Analysis

Abstract: We have developed a framework for the Monte-Carlo simulation of the X-Ray Telescopes (XRT) and the X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS) onboard Suzaku, mainly for the scientific analysis of spatially and spectroscopically complex celestial sources. A photon-by-photon instrumental simulator is built on the ANL platform, which has been successfully used in ASCA data analysis. The simulator has a modular structure, in which the XRT simulation is based on a ray-tracing library, while the XIS simulation utilizes a spe… Show more

“…The background was taken from a source-free annulus centered at the source peak, with an internal and external radius of 3 5 and 5 7, respectively. We generated the ancillary response matrices (ARFs) and the detector response matrices (RMFs) using the XISRMFGEN and XISSIMARFGEN tasks (Ishisaki et al 2007), respectively. The spectra obtained by XIS 0 and XIS 3 were merged using MATHPHA, ADDRMF, and ADDARF.…”

“…We note that the size of each spectral extraction region used in this work is larger than the PSF size, minimizing the effect of PSF scattering in this analysis. To estimate the magnitude of this uncertainty, we use the ray-tracing simulator xissim to generate Suzaku event files using Ishisaki et al (2007). The Chandra ACIS images and the best-fit Suzaku spectral models are used to simulate event files of each XIS sensor with1 10 6 photons.…”

“…The primarily use of this model is to obtain a reliable approximation of the observed astrophysical background for the flat-field image construction and we do not justify its physical nature here. Finally, we simulated the flat field image with xissim tool (Ishisaki et al 2007) using the best-fit spectral model for the background. The photon number in simulations was large enough to ensure the good statistics.…”
