Monte Carlo simulation of electron detachment properties for ${{\text{O}_{2}^{{}}}^{-}}$ ions in oxygen and oxygen:nitrogen mixtures

Abstract: Electron detachment properties of −O 2 ions in pure oxygen and oxygen:nitrogen mixtures have been studied by a Monte Carlo technique for the reduced electric fields up to 350 Td (1 Td = 10 −17 V•cm 2 ). Swarm parameters were calculated for unexcited and vibrationally excited − O 2 ions taking into account vibrational transfer and relaxation, charge transfer and electron detachment. The cross sections for vibrational transfer and relaxation in collisions between − O 2 ions and O 2 molecules were calculated on t… Show more

“…The findings of Neill and Craggs [8] for pure O 2 agree with only a slight offset. As Ponomarev and Aleksandrov [57] model is based on data from Frommhold [53], their theoretical results differ from ours by two orders of magnitude.…”

“…Our value for ν O2 d /N seems to match the one of Neill and Craggs [8], yet contrasts strongly with that of Frommhold [53]. The theoretical values of Pancheshnyi [17] and Ponomarev and Aleksandrov [57] are based on Frommhold's results, which they use as input for their models. Ponomarev and Aleksandrov [57] discuss the discrepancy in between those two measurements [53,8] and judge the results of Frommhold more reliable, which they use as input for their further calculation.…”

“…One is the randomness of the ignition process and the other one is the randomness of the propagation process. Most of the previous works have focused on the latter process 24,[35][36][37] whereas the streamer ignition process [38][39][40][41] has attracted less attention. The ignition delay time is a critical characteristic for better understanding of the influence of the background ionization level on the repetitive behavior of the streamers.…”
