Monsoon Impact on the Air Quality During SAR-CoV-2 Pandemic Spread in Central Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah: Pre, During and Post Lockdown Scenarios

Abstract: Malaysia is considered as one of the countries with the highest novel corona virus (COVID-19) infected cases in Southeast Asia. Recent studies have identified that the air quality of a region also governs the transmission of the virus through pollutants. Hence, a study was conducted to assess the influence of air quality on the COVID-19 pandemic spread in central Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. An attempt was also made to infer the effect of monsoonal precipitation on air quality. Central Peninsular Malaysia co… Show more

“…During this season, the Asian continent's hot temperature creates a low-pressure area while the Australian continent's cold temperature creates a high-pressure area. The Northeast Monsoon is formed as the wind moves from Australia's high pressure area to Asia's low pressure area (Prasanna & Chidambaram 2021). This result was supported by another study in Malaysia which stated that the winds moved northward and then only changed into eastward when it approached the northern tip of Vietnam (Daryabor et al 2014).…”

“…Meanwhile, the air masses were also predicted to be transported to the southeast of Pasir Gudang where Kampung Pasir Putih and Pasir Gudang Port are located. During inter-monsoon, the winds were forecasted to transport the air pollutants to various directions (Prasanna & Chidambaram 2021). Furthermore, when the weather during the inter-monsoon is humid, it will raise the ambient temperature in Malaysia, particularly in the afternoon, influencing the accumulation of air pollutants (Latif et al 2012).…”
