Abstract.A photochemical trajectory model has been used to simulate the chemical evolution of air masses arriving at the TORCH field campaign site in the southern UK during late July and August 2003, a period which included a widespread and prolonged photochemical pollution episode. The model incorporates speciated emissions of 124 nonmethane anthropogenic VOC and three representative biogenic VOC, coupled with a comprehensive description of the chemistry of their degradation. A representation of the gas/aerosol absorptive partitioning of ca. 2000 oxygenated organic species generated in the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM v3.1) has been implemented, allowing simulation of the contribution to organic aerosol (OA) made by semi-and non-volatile products of VOC oxidation; emissions of primary organic aerosol (POA) and elemental carbon (EC) are also represented. Simulations of total OA mass concentrations in nine case study events (optimised by comparison with observed hourly-mean mass loadings derived from aerosol mass spectrometry measurements) imply that the OA can be ascribed to three general sources: (i) POA emissions; (ii) a "ubiquitous" background concentration of 0.7 µg m −3 ; and (iii) gas-to-aerosol transfer of lower volatility products of VOC oxidation generated by the regional scale processing of emitted VOC, but with all partitioning coefficients increased by a species-independent factor of 500. The requirement to scale the partitioning coefficients, and the implied background concentration, are both indicative of the occurrence of chemical processes within the aerosol which allow the oxidised organic species to react by association and/or accretion reactions which generate even lower volatility products, leading to a persistent, non-volatile secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Jenkin (m.jenkin@imperial.ac.uk) rial to the simulated OA results in significant elevations in the simulated ratio of organic carbon (OC) to EC, compared with the ratio of 1.1 assigned to the emitted components. For the selected case study events, [OC]/[EC] is calculated to lie in the range 2.7-9.8, values which are comparable with the high end of the range reported in the literature.

The aims of this study were to investigate the impact of meteorological parameters and trace gas concentrations on daily hospital walk-ins and admissions in Chiang-Mai province, Thailand, during 2007Thailand, during -2013. Advanced statistical models, including t-tests, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Multiple Linear Regression Analysis (MLRA) and Incremental Lifetime Particulate Matter Exposure (ILPE), were constructed using meteorological data from the Pollution Control Department (PCD), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), Thailand, and the Thai Meteorological Department at Chiang-Mai Province Air Quality Observatory Site (TMCS) as well as the number of walk-in and admitted patients at Nakornping Hospital, Chiang-Mai (NHCM). The results showed that all trace gaseous species and PM 10 were significantly higher during the "haze episode" than during the "non-haze period." The FTIR spectra highlight the relatively homogeneous organic functional compositions of PM 2.5 collected from urban, suburban and rural observatory sites, indicating that agricultural waste burning plays an important role in air quality during the "haze episode." The effect of age on susceptibility to respiratory diseases was investigated by separating the dataset into four groups (i.e., < 15 years, 15-59 years, 60-74 years and ≥ 75 years). The ANOVA results revealed a significant increase in hospital walk-ins and admissions for both genders in the < 15 years group (p < 0.005). MLRA revealed the significantly highest impacts of CO on hospital walk-ins for both genders. The predicted ILPE of PM 10 showed the highest values for both genders during the "haze-episode" in 2007, with average values of 3.338 ± 0.576 g and 1.838 ± 0.317 g for male and female outdoor workers, respectively, over an exposure duration of 25 years.

Abstract. The ozonolysis of α-phellandrene, a highly reactive conjugated monoterpene largely emitted by Eucalypt species, is characterised in detail for the first time using a smog chamber at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Gas-phase species were monitored by a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF), with yields from a large number of products obtained, including formaldehyde (5-9 %), acetaldehyde (0.2-8 %), glyoxal (6-23 %), methyl glyoxal (2-9 %), formic acid (22-37 %) and acetic acid (9-22 %). Higher m/z second-generation oxidation products were also observed, with products tentatively identified according to a constructed degradation mechanism. OH yields from α-phellandrene and its first-generation products were found to be 35 ± 12 and 15 ± 7 %, respectively, indicative of prominent hydroperoxide channels. An average first-generation rate coefficient was determined as 1.0 ± 0.7 × 10 −16 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 at 298 K, showing ozonolysis as a dominant loss process for both α-phellandrene and its first-generation products in the atmosphere. Endocyclic conjugation in α-phellandrene was also found to be conducive to the formation of highly condensible products with a large fraction of the carbon mass partitioning into the aerosol phase, which was monitored with a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and a high-resolution timeof-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS). Nucleation was observed almost instantaneously upon ozonolysis, indicating the rapid formation of extremely low-volatility compounds. Particle nucleation was found to be suppressed by the addition of either NO 2 or a Criegee scavenger, with it being proposed that stabilised Criegee intermediates are important for new particle formation in the system. Aerosol yields ranged from 25 to 174 % depending on mass loadings, with both first-and second-generation products identified as large contributors to the aerosol mass. In short, with a high chemical reactivity and aerosol-forming propensity, α-phellandrene is expected to have an immediate impact on the local environment to which it is emitted, with ozonolysis likely to be an important contributor to the significant blue haze and frequent nocturnal nucleation events observed over Eucalypt forests.
