Monosodium urate crystal deposition associated with the progress of radiographic grade at the sacroiliac joint in axial SpA: a dual-energy CT study

Abstract: BackgroundPrevious studies have revealed that ankylosing spondylitis (AS), as the progenitor of axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA), has been characterized by the insidiously progressive nature of sacroiliitis and spondylitis. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has recently been used to analyse the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals with higher sensitivity and specificity. However, it remains unclear whether the existence of the MSU crystal deposition detected by DECT at the sacroiliac joint in pati… Show more

“…[28,29] In a rheumatology research for SpA, the MSU crystal deposition at the sacroiliac joints, detected by Dual-energy computed tomography, was associated with the progress of radiographic grade at sacroiliac joints in those patients. [30] The outcome of that rheumatology research supported our result.…”

“…Additionally, studies have demonstrated that people with hyperuricemia had a higher risk of developing hypertension, overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, kidney diseases, and CVD 24. Recently, Zhu et al25 found that without concomitant gout, significant deposition of monosodium urate crystals occurred in the sacroiliac joint of patients with axial spondyloarthropathy and exacerbated the radiographic progression of their disease. Thus, the current evidence suggests that hyperuricemia cannot be ignored in AS patients.…”

“…Novel findings, using DECT, have further indicated that, in the absence of gout, urate crystals deposit in costal cartilages and intervertebral disks in middle-aged men [ 17 ], and at several sites of axial and peripheral joint involvement in spondyloarthropathy and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis patients [ 18 , 19 ]. Nevertheless, the mechanism and tissue effects of deposited urate crystals in these conditions are unknown.…”
