Monosodium glutamate (MSG):promoter of neurotoxicity, testicular impairment, inflammation and apoptosis in male rats

Abstract: Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is one of the most common food additives extensively used as a flavor enhancer. MSG induced lipid peroxidation and inflammation. The present study aimed to assess the neurotoxicity, testicular impairment, inflammation and apoptosis induced by MSG. Thirty adult male Wistar rats, weighing about 180-200 g were assigned equally into five groups, each consists of six rats. Animals of Group I are controls and they received distilled water, whereas animals of Groups II, III, IV and V were g… Show more

“…Rats were randomly allocated into five groups (six rats each) as follows: Group 1: this group received normal laboratory diet, tap water ad libitum and given saline daily during the time of experiment. Group 2: this group fed HFHFD for 12 weeks and given saline daily during the time of experiment. Group 3: this group fed HFHFD for 12 weeks and omega‐3 oil (260 mg/kg) for the last 4 weeks Group 4: this group fed HFHFD for 12 weeks and metformin (100 mg/kg) for the last 4 weeks …”

“…Cardiovascular diseases, due to their prevalence, as well as a prominent place in the structure of mortality, are a significant medical and social problem [1,9]. Cerebral stroke ranks 5th among the causes of death and is the leading cause of disability [26].…”

“…Despite the important role of monosodium glutamate in the development of certain pathological conditions, its influence on the structure and function of the vascular bed, in particular the carotid arteries and the carotid sinus, has not been sufficiently studied. However, the role of monosodium glutamate in the development of obesity and hypertension [25], Alzheimer's disease [13], abnormalities in the development of the nervous system [1] and gastric erosions [8] is described in the scientific literature. The relationship between monosodium glutamate consumption and manifestations of toxic effects in tissues of lymph nodes [15], colon [16], liver [6] and reproductive system [20] was also shown.…”

“…Despite numerous studies reporting the harmful effects of monosodium glutamate on the living organism [1], its use continues to be widespread and sometimes uncontrolled due to the fact that the presence of the additive E621 is often not even recorded on food packaging. The monosodium salt of glutamic acid is also present in baby food products.…”

“…Oxidative stress is considered one of the important pathogenetic aspects of sodium glutamate's influence on a living organism [6,7]. An important role is also played by the development of inflammation and fibrosis [7], metabolic disorders [3,18] and DNA damage -the so-called genotoxic effect [1,10]. Numerous studies have reported adverse effects of monosodium glutamate on the heart [3] and vessels, including the aorta [3] and thoracic arteries [13], as well as other organs [4].…”
