“…Based on the known generation of Fe(CO) 5 during photolysis of Fe 2/3+ in a formic acid medium, 21 it was speculated that a volatile compound of the form Os w (CO) x (CH 3 ) y H z may be generated in acetic acid, as opposed to a simpler Os(CO) 5 or clustered polynuclear complex 41 [such as Os 3 (CO) 12 ] that may arise in formic acid due not only to the very low concentrations used for PVG synthesis, but because Os(CO) 5 only slowly converts to the triosmium cluster at temperatures above 80 °C. 42 Moreover, we a priori presume here that a likely methylated Os species is actually generated as it is well-known that the CO ligands are generally quite labile in transition metal carbonyls, 43–45 particularly under UV irradiation, 46 and given the ready availability of H˙ and H 3 C˙ radicals in the photolysed acetic acid medium, 1,3 possible formation of a generalized species such as Os w (CO) x (CH 3 ) y H z should not be overlooked. The inability to detect Os species by GC-MS as a volatile PVG product is likely connected with the reactivity of such carbonylated metal species.…”
