Monocyte–lymphocyte ratio is a valuable predictor for diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is serious threat to human health. Therefore, early prediction of its occurrence is important. This study aimed to assess the predictive significance of monocyte–lymphocyte ratio (MLR) for DN. A total of 301 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), including 212 T2D patients without diabetic-related complications and 99 DN patients, were enrolled. Peripheral white blood cells were measured before treatment to calculate MLR, and the risk factors and predictive significance for … Show more

“…The PCR, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte, platelet-to-lymphocyte, and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratios are parameters that have been shown to be useful as inflammation and prognostic markers in different entities, including in SARS-CoV-2 infection. 5 , 6 , 7 In our patient, a trend towards improvement of these parameters can be seen parallel to the initiation of therapy, especially NLR and MLRI ( Table 1 ). However, given that this is a single case and there are concomitants factors, such as the evolution of infection process itself, we cannot affirm that the effects obtained are attributable to the use of the aforementioned filter.…”

“…since MpV is a surrogate marker of platelet activation [28], elevated MPV should be an expected laboratory finding in frail recent articles in medical literature pointed out the association between MLr and several clinical conditions. These include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [29], gastrointestinal stromal tumor [30], preeclampsia [31], type 2 diabetes mellitus [32], irritable bowel disease [33], osteoporosis [34], diabetic kidney injury [35], and hyperglycemia during pregnancy [36]. all of these conditions are associated with various amount of inflammation.…”

“…The value of MLR in the management of DM extends to common complications despite its poor diagnostic performance ( Figure 2 G,H). In diabetic kidney injury, high MLR was correlated with microalbuminuria and was thus a predictive marker for diabetic nephropathy [ 40 , 41 ]. MLR was similarly elevated in proliferative diabetic retinopathy and may thus have a prognostic value [ 42 ] in combination with fibrinogen levels [ 43 ].…”
