Monoclonal antibodies to glycoprotein B differentiate human herpesvirus 6 into two clusters, variants A and B

Abstract: The distribution of glycoprotein B (gB) among different human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) strains was analysed with a panel of three monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) derived from mice immunized with U1102-infected lymphocytes. MAb 2D9 reacted specifically by immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation with the Ul102 and GS isolates, and failed to react with Z29 and the variant B strains Hashimoto and SF. In addition, Z29, Hashimoto and SF gB had a lower M r than U1102 and GS gB. MAb 2D9 also failed to react with the exan… Show more

“…HHV-6 was originally classified into two variants, HHV-6A and -B, based on differences in their genetic characteristics and cell tropism (2)(3)(4)(5). However, quite recently, HHV-6A and HHV-6B were reclassified into different species (according to the Virus Taxonomy List 2011).…”

“…Currently, HHV-6 can be classified into two variants, HHV-6A and HHV-6B, based on differences in genetic, antigenic, and growth characteristics and cell tropisms (1,5,7,8). HHV-6B causes infant ES, and more than 90% of people have antibodies (Abs) against HHV-6B (31, 38), while the pathogenesis of HHV-6A is still unknown.…”

“…uman herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), betaherpesvirus subfamily (1), includes two species, A (HHV-6A) and B (HHV-6B) (2)(3)(4). HHV-6B mainly infects immune cells, such as CD4 ϩ T-lymphocytes, monocytes, and dendritic cells, and also causes exanthema subitum during primary infection in children (5).…”
