Biofunctional textiles with integrated drug-delivery systems can help in the fight against vector-borne diseases. The use of repellent agents derived from plants and oils is an alternative to DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-methylbenzamide), which has disadvantages that include toxic reactions and skin damage. However, some researchers report that oils can be ineffective due to reasons related to uncontrolled release. In this work, the mechanism of control of citronella oil (OC) complexed with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) on cotton (COT) and polyester (PES) textiles was investigated. The results obtained reveal that finishing cotton and polyester with β-cyclodextrin complexes allows for control of the release mechanism of the drug from the fabric. To assess the complexes formed, optical microscopy, SEM, and FTIR were carried out; the yield of complex formation was obtained by spectroscopy in the ultraviolet region; and controlled release was performed in vitro. Oil complexation with βCD had a yield of 63.79%, and it was observed that the release, which was in seconds, moved to hours when applied to fabrics. The results show that complexes seem to be a promising basis when it comes to immobilizing oils and controlling their release when modified with chemical crosslinking agents.

The research covers investigation on physical modification of pure cotton fabric using β-CD and its derivative i.e. randomly methylated β-CD (MCD). The obtained material was investigated by means of properties changes when compared to native cotton. The research on retention of small organic molecules and water was done as well. According to obtained results it might be stated that physical modification allow to avoid toxic reagents needed for chemical modification and the material possess interesting retention properties. However the application of obtained fabrics are limited to the single-use application due to washing out of carbohydrate from the cotton matrix.

Monochlorotriazinyl β-cyclodextrin (MCT β-CD) was employed for the inclusion complexation with oils of cedarwood, clove, eucalyptus and peppermint to assess their release behavior from functionalized cotton. The process of MCT β-CD grafting was optimized using response surface methodology with three independent factors including MCT β-CD concentration, pH and curing temperature and effect of their second order interactions on dependent variables as % nitrogen content, % graft yield, tensile strength and wash durability was examined. The interaction of MCT β-CD concentration and pH had the decisive effect on the investigated dependent variables. FTIR and % retained nitrogen confirmed the substantial retention of modified host on functionalized cotton after five vigorous wash cycles. 1HNMR characterized the full entrapment of oils within MCT β-CD cavity on cotton. All the oils were substantially retained in the inclusion complexes with the MCT β-CD before and after wash than when present uncomplexed on the treated cotton. Peppermint was the slowest to fade off and cedarwood was rapid in sublimation from the cyclodextrin moieties.
