Abstract:Out of the several hundred copies of rRNA genes that are arranged in the nucleolar organizing regions (NOR) of the five human acrocentric chromosomes, ~50% remain transcriptionally inactive. NOR-associated sequences and epigenetic modifications contribute to differential expression of rRNAs.
