Monoalkylitaconates–vinylpyrrolidone copolymers. 2. Reactivity ratios and viscometric behaviour in dilute solutions

Abstract: Copolymerization of mono‐n‐decyl and mono‐n‐decyl and mono‐n‐dodecyl itaconate with vinylpyrrolidone (MOI‐VP, MDI‐VP and MDoI‐VP) was carried out using AIBN as initiator. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined by the Fineman‐Ross and Kelen‐Tüdös methods. Values of r1 and r2 were found to be less than unity for MOI‐VP, MDI‐VP and MDoI‐VP, corresponding to random copolymers with some tendency to alternance. Copolymers of various compositions were studied in solution, and Mark‐Houwink‐Kuhn‐Sakurada relatio… Show more

“…The observed di †erences among the values of MRR obtained for the copolymers are expected, according to data reported in literature. 4,5,13,17 It is interesting to note the good agreement shown in the di †erent sets of data. In all cases the tendency is similar.…”

“…Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) is a water soluble functionalized vinyl polymer, physiologically compatible, non-toxic, and colorless 29 . Its monomer unit, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone shows an amphiphilic nature as a consequence of its amide polar group, which provides hydrophilic character to the macromolecule, and of methine and methylene groups, which provide hydrophobic moieties 30 . This combination of properties predestined its use in numerous applications in medicine, pharmaceutical technology, cosmetics, in the technical industry, as stabilizer of suspensions, in ophthalmic preparations and in film coating 29 .…”

“…A s mentioned above, the flexibility suggests that there is a rotational barrier about the bond linkage and therefore also suggests the proclivity to break the bond. In a general sense, the tendency to degrade will be larger as the flexibility in the chain is greater (30). Therefore, the stability should be higher in DMI-MMA copolymers than in DBI-MMA copolymers.…”
