Mono and Dinuclear Cu(II) Carboxylate Complexes with Pyridine and 1‐methylimidazole as Co–Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, Antibacterial Activity and Catalytic Nitroaldol Reactions

Abstract: A new series of Cu(II) carboxylate complexes [Cu2(RCOO)4(Py)2] (1 & 2) and [Cu(RCOO)2(MIm)2] (3 & 4) {RCOO=p–FBA (p‐fluorobenzoic acid), BA (benzoic acid), Py (Pyridine), MIm (1–methylimidazole)} have been synthesized. The composition of complexes (1–4) has been established by spectral (FTIR, UV/Vis & EPR) methods and elemental analysis. Molecular structures of copper(II) carboxylate complexes [Cu2(p–FBA)4(Py)2] (1) and [Cu(p–FBA)2(MIm)2] (3) were established by X–ray diffraction. These copper(II) carboxylate … Show more

“…Carboxylic acids ( HL 1 and HL 2 ) and copper complexes ( 1 and 2 ) were assessed in vitro for their DPPH free radical scavenging potentials following a reported procedure [45] . Different concentrations (15, 30, 60, 120 and 240 μ M) of the test compounds were mixed with 1000 μ L ethanolic solution of DPPH (255 μ M).…”

“…A comparison of the FT-IR spectra of CPSx and CPSx-Cu complexes shows that the peaks of the bending vibrations of C–H in pyridine shift to higher frequencies in the FT-IR spectra of CPSx-Cu complexes (CPS1-Cu = 945 cm –1 , 899 cm –1 , and 777 cm –1 ; CPS2-Cu = 948 cm –1 , 899 cm –1 , and 780 cm –1 ; CPS3-Cu = 945 cm –1 , 898 cm –1 , and 783 cm –1 ), whereas the peaks of the absorption bands of NC–H remain unchanged. This implies that the nitrogen atom in pyridine, and not the nitrogen atom of imine, forms a coordination bond with the copper ion …”

“…The shoulder peak at 340 nm in the ultraviolet region belongs to Fe(III) in LAHP-Fe(III) complexes and the broad bands at 800-600 nm (d → d transition) in the visible region for Cu(II) in the LAHP-Cu(II) complex. 31,32,33 To reveal the chemical composition profiles of LAHP-M complexes, infrared spectroscopy (IR) was used, as shown in Fig. 2E.…”
