Monitoring VoIP call quality using improved simplified E-model

Abstract: Abstract-ITU-T recommendation G.107 introduced the Emodel, a repeatable way to assess if a network is prepared to carry a VoIP call or not. Various studies show that the Emodel is complex with many factors to be used in monitoring purposes. Consequently, simplified versions of the E-model have been proposed to simplify the calculations and focus on the most important factors required for monitoring the call quality. In this paper, we propose simple correction to a simplified E-model; we show how to calculate t… Show more

“…POLQA has sought to address some of the known shortcomings of PESQ, but only a small number of recent publications, e.g., [25], have begun to evaluate the performance of POLQA for VoIP issues. PESQ is still worthy of analysis as recently published research continues to use PESQ for VoIP speech quality assessment, e.g., [26,27]. This paper presents the culmination of work from the authors [4,5,28] in developing a new objective metric of speech quality, called ViSQOL.…”

“…Corrected versions of the E-model have been proposed to simplify the calculations and focus on the most important factors required for monitoring the call quality [8]. Paulsen et al [9] introduced a new parametrized QoS measurement method for VoIP applications.…”

“…We use one of the unused fields in RTCP RRs to include random and burst losses. In order to derive the <d network , MOS network > pair, we directly use the delay from the RTCP RR whilst we map the burst ratio, random packet loss and with the known codec used into MOS using the corrected simplified E-model [12]. In order to measure the expected call quality from using different RS codes, we added nT as a worst case delay overhead depending on the used RS code.…”
