Monitoring total-body inflammation and damage in joints and entheses: the first follow-up study of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: WBMRI allows simultaneous monitoring of most axial and peripheral joints and entheses in RA patients and can visualize a decrease in inflammatory counts during treatment. This first WBMRI follow-up study of patients with RA encourages further investigation of the usefulness of WBMRI in RA.

“…Some of the improvements are specialized surface coils, continuous table movement (CTM), improved respiratory gating, planning software and pulse sequences. These system improvements in MRI technology have led to impressive results in both oncological and non-oncological applications of WB-MRI compared to more conventional imaging methods(4,1114). As it turns out, most of the applications have been limited to anatomical and qualitative MRI parameters.…”

“…It was decided to test and further develop the system by iterative multi-reader exercises. (13)(14)(15) In 2017-2018, 4 (3 cross-sectional and 1 longitudinal) web-based multireader exercises were performed, separated by online training and calibration meetings. Schematics for data recording the presence of lesions and their severity were drawn (S.K.…”

“…The most common nononcologic musculoskeletal indication for WB-MRI is rheumatologic disease including psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile spondyloarthropathies, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, and systemic sclerosis. 34,35 WB-MRI enables the global assessment of active and chronic involvement of entheses, synovial joints, and tendons in both the axial and peripheral skeleton. 34 MRI is sensitive in detecting early prestructural inflammatory changes such as bone marrow edema adjacent to joints and disks (►Fig.…”
