Monitoring Pollution in River MureŞ, Romania, Part III: biochemical effect markers in fish and integrative reflection

Abstract: Along a downstream stretch of River Mureş, Romania, adult males of two feral fish species, European chub (Leuciscus cephalus) and sneep (Chondrostoma nasus) were sampled at four sites with different levels of contamination. Fish were analysed for the biochemical markers hsp70 (in liver and gills) and hepatic EROD activity, as well as several biometrical parameters (age, length, wet weight, condition factor). None of the biochemical markers correlated with any biometrical parameter, thus biomarker reactions wer… Show more

“…Liver-, gill-and spleen-somatic indexes (HSI), were obtained as (OW/W) × 100, where OW=organ weight (g), (16). These morphometric parameters are considered markers of general fish health (17,18).…”

“…The liver was excised immediately after fish had been anaesthetized and cut into four portions. One portion was transferred into fixative (Bouin's solution)) for histological investigations, one other portion was frozen in liquid nitrogen for metal analyses, and the third and fourth portions were frozen in liquid nitrogen for stress protein and EROD analyses (Köhler et al 2007). After the liver had been dissected, the gills were removed.…”

“…In the entire Mureş monitoring project, three different biomarkers were investigated in sneep and chub: (1) histopathological biomarkers in liver and gills which are presented in this paper (part II of the series), and analyses of (2) stress proteins and (3) biotransformation enzymes described by Köhler et al (2007).…”

“…The efects on organisms' growth and development were triggered by the inhibition of enzymatic systems involved in protein synthesis and cell division. The metal type modulates the bioaccumulation level and enzymatic systems vulnerability generating a multitude of efects, toxic or not [42,43].In order to understand the interaction mechanism between the toxic metals and the aquatic organisms and how organisms answer to metal contamination, more information on bioavailability is needed [44]."t the present, many studies on the assessment of acute and chronic toxicity of metals mentioned the following parameters: survival, growth, development, reproduction, behavior, accumulation, efects on enzyme systems, etc. In Table , LC (EC) 0-lethal concentrations for 0% of tested organisms after 9 or 48 h M"TC-maximum acceptable toxicant concentration in aquatic systems NOEC-no observed efect concentration LOEC-low observed efect concentration.…”
