Monitoring Oxidation of Chlorinated Ethenes by Permanganate in Groundwater Using Stable Isotopes:  Laboratory and Field Studies

Abstract: closest sampling location to the injection point, the δ 13 C rebounded to the initial δ 13 C again, likely due to dissolution of DNAPL. Isotope mass balance calculations made it possible to identify zones where TCE oxidation continued to occur during the rebound phase. The study indicates that δ 13 C values can be used to assess the dynamics between TCE oxidation and dissolution and to locate zones of oxidation of chlorinated ethenes that cannot be identified from the Cl -distribution alone.

“…Measuring isotope fractionation (e.g. 13 C/ 12 C) is also a powerful tool to quantify microbial activity (Bloom et al 2000;Hunkeler et al 2001;Hunkeler et al 2003). The degradation of specific substances, including isotopically labelled compounds, can be studied in different ways:…”

“…A number of review articles provide insight into the chemistry and proper application of oxidation regimens (Gates and Siegrist 1995;Kubal et al 2008;Rivas 2006;Seol et al 2003;Tsai et al 2008;Watts and Teel 2005). ISCO has been successfully used to oxidize and thus lower the concentration of petroleum-derived hydrocarbons (total petroleum hydrocarbons, TPH, Crimi and Taylor 2007;Gates and Siegrist 1995;Huang et al 2005;Jung et al 2005;Lee and Kim 2002), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH; Lee and Hosomi 2001;Masten and Davies 1997;Nam et al 2001;Watts et al 2002), and chlorinated hydrocarbons (Huang et al 1999(Huang et al , 2005Hunkeler et al 2003;Northup and Cassidy 2008;Ormad et al 1994;Schnarr et al 1998;Siegrist et al 1999;Vella and Veronda 1993;Watts et al 1990). ISCO is a versatile remediation strategy, providing rapid and extensive removal of both light and dense recalcitrant compounds in pure phase.…”

“…The trend toward enriched δ 13 C values observed at IW-4 was also accompanied by a decrease in VOC concentration and it is clear evidence of the occurrence of VOC oxidation by potassium permanganate. δ 13 C values as high as +200 ‰ have been observed in granular aquifers where the VOC source has been completely oxidized (Hunkeler et al, 2003). The relatively low δ…”

“…Significant carbon isotope fractionation has been reported for biodegradation of chlorinated ethenes and chlorinated ethanes in laboratory experiments (e.g., Bloom et al, 2000;Chartrand et al, 2005;Hunkeler et al, 1999) and isotopic analysis has been applied at field sites to demonstrate and evaluate biodegradation of these compounds in groundwater (e.g., Hunkeler et al, 1999;Sherwood Lollar and Slater, 2001;Vieth et al, 2003). Laboratory studies have also shown that strong carbon isotope fractionation occurs during chemical oxidation of chlorinated compounds by potassium permanganate (e.g., Hunkeler et al, 2003) which makes isotopic analyses a potentially powerful diagnostic tool for monitoring ISCO, since they can be used to verify that concentration declines in target compounds are due to degradation instead of physical (e.g., displacement) processes. The laboratory at the UW has the capability to analyze carbon isotopes of chlorinated ethenes over a wide concentration range, including very low (i.e.…”
