Among the different contributions generating self‐potential, the streaming potential is of particular interest in hydrogeology for its sensitivity to water flow. Estimating water flux in porous media using streaming potential data relies on our capacity to understand, model, and upscale the electrokinetic coupling at the mineral‐solution interface. Different approaches have been proposed to predict streaming potential generation in porous media. One of these approaches is the flux averaging which is based on determining the excess charge which is effectively dragged in the medium by water flow. In this study, we develop a physically based analytical model to predict the effective excess charge in saturated porous media using a flux‐averaging approach in a bundle of capillary tubes with a fractal pore size distribution. The proposed model allows the determination of the effective excess charge as a function of pore water ionic concentration and hydrogeological parameters like porosity, permeability, and tortuosity. The new model has been successfully tested against different set of experimental data from the literature. One of the main findings of this study is the mechanistic explanation to the empirical dependence between the effective excess charge and the permeability that has been found by several researchers. The proposed model also highlights the link to other lithological properties, and it is able to reproduce the evolution of effective excess charge with electrolyte concentrations.

Understanding streaming potential generation in porous media is of high interest for hydrological and reservoir studies as it allows to relate water fluxes to measurable electrical potential distributions. This streaming potential generation results from an electrokinetic coupling due to the presence of an electrical double layer developing at the interface between minerals and pore water. Therefore, the pore sizes of the porous medium are expected to play an important role in the streaming potential generation. In this work we use 2‐D pore network simulations to study the effect of the pore size distribution upon this electrokinetic mechanism. Our simulations allow a detailed study of the influence of a large range of permeabilities (from 10−16 to 10−10 m2) for different ionic concentrations (from 10−4 to 1 mol/L). We then use and compare two different approaches that have been used over the last decades to model and interpret the streaming potential generation: the classical coupling coefficient or the effective excess charge density, which has been defined recently. Our results show that the four pore size distributions tested in the present work have a restricted influence on the coupling coefficient for ionic concentration smaller than 10−3 mol/L while it completely drives the behavior of the effective excess charge density over orders of magnitude. Then, we use these simulation results to test an analytical model based on a fractal pore size distributions. This model predicts well the effective excess charge density for all pore size distributions under the thin double layer assumption.

Tidal influence on self‐potential measurements

Long‐term surface and borehole self‐potential (SP) monitoring was conducted in the UK Chalk aquifer at two sites. The coastal site is ~1.7 km from the coast, and the inland site is ~80 km from the coast. At both sites, power spectral density analysis revealed that SP data contain the main ocean tidal periodic components. However, the principal lunar component (M2), the dominant ocean tidal component, was most significant at the coastal site. The M2 signal in surface‐referenced SP data at the inland site was partly due to telluric currents caused by the geomagnetic ocean dynamo. Earth and/or atmospheric tides also contributed, as the SP power spectrum was not typical of a telluric electric field. The M2 component in borehole‐referenced data at the inland site was below the significance level of the analysis method and was 2 orders of magnitude smaller than the M2 signal in borehole‐referenced SP data at the coastal site. The tidal response of the SP data in the coastal borehole is, therefore, primarily driven by ocean tides. These cause changes in fluid pressure and chemical concentration gradients within the coastal aquifer, leading to time varying electrokinetic and exclusion‐diffusion potentials. Borehole‐referenced SP measurements could be used to characterize and monitor tidal processes in coastal aquifers such as the intrusion of seawater.
