Monitoring of heavy metal partitioning in reef corals of Lakshadweep Archipelago, Indian Ocean

Abstract: This paper focuses on the partitioning of trace metals in five selected coral species from Lakshadweep Archipelago, which remains as one of the least studied areas in the Indian Ocean. Based on the morphological features, selected coral species are classified as massive (Porites andrewsi), ramose or branching (Lobophyllia corymbosa, Acropora formosa and Psammocora contigua) and foliaceous (Montipora digitata). Relating trace metal concentrations with morphological features in skeleton, highest concentrations o… Show more

“…at site III (Table 2). These considerable variations may be related to the physicochemical factors of the aquatic medium (Phillips 1980;Esslemont 2000) in the studied sites and the diVerent accumulation strategies of corals Dallinger and Rainbow 1993;Anu et al 2007). Increasing salinity of seawater can increase the cadmium uptake (Ramos et al 2004).…”

“…There are some evidences that corals might be able to regulate the concentrations of metal in their tissues (e.g. Peters et al 1997;Esslemont 2000;Reichelt-Brushett and McOristb 2003;Anu et al 2007). The regulation of the body metal concentration to an approximately constant level is achieved by balancing excretion to metal uptake ).…”

“…The detrimental effect of trace metals on the structure of coral reef communities is well documented. However, these effects on specific coral species have been more variable depending on the type and size of the sediment, frequently on the load, clearing ability, colony morphology and species resistance (Esslemont 2000; Elizalde et al 2002;Anu et al 2007).…”
