Concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Co and Fe) were measured in the seawater, sediments, common scleractinian reef-building corals and soft corals (Octocorallia : Alcyonacea) at seven reef sites in the Northern Red Sea: I (Hurghada), II (Ras Za'farana), III (El-Ain Al-Sukhna), IV (El-Tur), V (Sha'b Rashdan), VI (Sharm El-Sheikh) and VII (Dahab). Levels of heavy metals were considerably elevated in seawater, sediments and corals collected from reef sites exposed to increased environmental contamination, as a result of diversiWed natural and anthropogenic inputs. Soft corals of genera Lithophyton, Sarcophyton and Sinularia showed higher concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd and Ni than hard coral genera Acropora and Stylophora. Soft coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum collected from El Ain Al-Suhkna (Gulf of Suez) had greater concentration of Cu, followed by hard corals Acropora pharaonis and Acropora hemprichi. The elevated levels of Zn, Cd and Ni were reported in the dry tissue of soft coral Sinularia spp. On the other hand, the soft coral Lithophyton arboreum displayed the highest concentration of Pb at Sha'b Rashdan (Gulf of Suez) and elevated concentration of Zn at Sharm El-Sheikh. Sediments showed signiWcantly higher concentration of Fe than corals. The higher levels of Fe in hard corals than soft corals reXected the incorporation of Fe into the aragonite and the chelation with the organic matrix of the skeleton. The greater abundance of soft corals in metal-contaminated reef sites and the elevated levels of metals in their tissue suggesting that the soft corals could develop a tolerance mechanism to relatively high concentrations of metals. Although the eVects of heavy metals on reef corals were not isolated from the possible eVects of other stresses, the percentage cover of dead corals were signiWcantly higher as the concentrations of heavy metals increased.

Corals incorporate major and trace elements in their tissues and skeletons, acting as good proxies for contaminant inputs over time. This incorporation occurs by a variety of mechanisms and depends on the bioavailability of elements. Corals are very susceptible to metal contamination during sample collection. As such, pre-treatment procedures need to include a decontamination step. The high Na and Ca concentrations in the matrix make the determination of trace metals an analytical challenge. The present paper reviews all the information published on coral sample pretreatments, metal determinations in corals, and also discusses the use of coral to monitor metal contamination.Keywords: monitoring; contamination; CaCO 3 matrix. INTRODUÇÃONo ambiente aquático, elementos presentes em nível traço e em concentrações maiores podem ocorrer na fração dissolvida, coloidal, associados ao sedimento (material particulado e de fundo) e também aos tecidos biológicos. Os metais, em especial Cd, Pb e Hg, afetam a biota marinha, tanto pela mobilização das espécies metálicas, da fração particulada para a dissolvida, seguida pela assimilação da fase aquosa, como por meio da ingestão de sedimentos pela macrofauna bentônica, seguida da assimilação dos metais pelos intestinos. 1Os íons metálicos ocorrem nas formas livres, como complexos simples, com ligantes inorgânicos, quelatos, e ligantes orgânicos multidentados, adsorvidos na superfície de partículas. Os ligantes orgânicos podem ocorrer naturalmente, na forma de macromoléculas (e. g. proteínas, polissacarídeos, lipídios, lignina), contendo muitos sítios de ligação, ou como moléculas pequenas de origem antropogênica (e. g. cianetos, fluoretos, amônia).2 Os íons metálicos ligam--se à matéria orgânica, através do processo de quelação, formando complexos ou compostos de coordenação, que, eventualmente, se precipitam para o sedimento de fundo, afetando a biodisponibilidade dos elementos majoritários e minoritários. Os sedimentos de fundo são um depósito importante de contaminantes, não apenas de metais, mas também de contaminantes orgânicos, como os hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos. A ressuspensão de sedimentos de fundo contaminados pode contribuir para o aumento da biodisponibilidade de contaminantes para os organismos aquáticos, 3 atuando como fonte de contaminantes para a coluna d'água.A biodisponibilidade de espécies metálicas, numa perspectiva ambiental, pode ser definida como a concentração de metais livres e disponíveis na água ou associada aos sedimentos, sendo passíveis de incorporação, ao longo do tempo, aos tecidos dos organismos, por todas as vias, e podendo bioacumular e causar efeitos tóxicos. A bioacumulação, por sua vez, é o acúmulo líquido de um ou mais elementos-traço nos tecidos de um organismo, como resultado do consumo de todas as rotas ou fontes disponíveis de alimento (e. g. água, sedimento etc.)...

Surficial and core samples collected from the sedimentary microenvironments of Lakshadweep Archipelago were analysed for their trace metal contents. The synoptical relations in spatial distributions with respect to environmental conditions such as pH, organic carbon and sediment texture were inter-correlated. Some of the metals exhibited good correlations with Fe/Mn, which reflect their similarity in distribution rather than anthropogenic enrichment. Inter-relating the variations in metal-pH relationships with metal-organic carbon, in general, those which exhibited positive correlations with pH, displayed negative interactions with organic carbon content and vice versa. Comparatively, higher values of Fe in the mangrove area of one of the islands highlight the possibility of precipitation of Fe as iron sulphides, which are common in mangrove ecosystem. Based on the contamination factors for Pb, Zn and Cd, as well as the geo-accumulation index of Cd, it can be generalised that some of the islands remain polluted with respect to these elements. An evaluation based on pollution load index shows that none of the islands surveyed for this study posed a serious threat in trace metal pollution. Bray Curtis similarity index was computed to find out the similarity among metals/islands, using non-transformed data of metal concentrations. Group linkage clustering technique was used for drawing dendrograms to show the similarity among them.
