Monitoring of Defects of a Photovoltaic Power Plant Using a Drone

Abstract: Drone infrared camera monitoring of photovoltaic (PV) power plants allows us to quickly see a large area and to find the worst defects in PV panels, namely cracked PV cells with broken contacts. Roofs are suitable for the integration of PV power plants into buildings. The power plant at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, which was monitored by this method, does not show any significant defects, and the produced electric energy exceeds the expected values. On the contrary, the PV power plant in La… Show more

“…In 2018, two new methods were introduced for automatic fault detection, one by monitoring identical sets (sister arrays) connected to the same inverter of PV system [24] and one where PV measurements are clustered to normal and non-normal operation, based on the historical behavior of the PV system [25]. A most recent study featured the use of drones for temperature monitoring of PV plants on large rooftops [26].…”

“…Another important factor is the degradation of the system over time. However, such degradation is expected to be compensated by maintenance methods and various techniques such as monitoring systems [44,45].…”

“…Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can also support preliminary visual inspections of boilers in power production blocks. Drones, properly selected and constructed, can support the processes of maintaining and managing heating and electricity networks [ 54 , 55 , 56 ]. The drones are also used during monitoring and cyclical measurement of the volume of stored or accumulated goods, or orthophoto mapping [ 57 ].…”
