Monitoring of bluetongue virus in zoo animals in Spain, 2007–2019

Abstract: Bluetongue virus (BTV) (genus Orbivirus: family Reoviridae) is an emerging and re-emerging vector-borne RNA virus mainly transmitted by blood-sucking midges of the genus Culicoides (Diptera, family Ceratopogonidae) (Rao et al., 2017). This virus has recently been grouped into 24 'classical' (BTV-1 to BTV-24) and eleven atypical serotypes (BTV-25 to BTV-35). Bluetongue (BT) in domestic ruminant species is subject to compulsory eradication in the European Union (Council Directive, 2000/75/EC) since it is respons… Show more

“…African ruminants (Gemsboks, Waterbuck, and Eland), Camelids (llamas and camels), and the tested elephant showed seropositivity for Orbiviruses , corroborating previous findings [ 10 , 47 , 59 , 60 , 61 ], suggesting the possible involvement of these African ruminants in these viruses’ cycle.…”

“…Animals that survive the infection develop specific antibodies against the infecting serotype. However, the absence of cross-protection increases the risk of outbreaks when introducing an exotic serotype to animals previously exposed to other virus serotypes [ 4 , 5 , 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…High seropositivity of EEHV within multiple articles was also identified, as well as high seropositivity in elephants for the Bluetongue virus and Schmallenberg virus, especially considering that Elephantidae represented 1.6% of the dataset. The high seropositivity found for Bluetongue virus was suggested to occur from outbreaks from free-ranging wildlife or livestock surrounding the zoo (Dowgier et al 2018 , Caballero-Gomez et al 2021 ). In the same way, increased seroprevalence of WNV was found for captive Canidae and Felidae, a possible consequence of the role of various peridomestic mesocarnivores in WNV amplification cycles (Root, 2013 ).…”

“…Zoos are integral to public education and provide roughly 350 millions (USD) in global funds to conservation projects (Gusset and Dick 2011 ; Mellish et al 2019 ). Zoos can also monitor disease transmission at an individual level within their facility (Caballero-Gomez et al 2019 , 2021 ) and may provide greater insight into animal populations at the human-animal interface (Robinette et al 2017 ). Infectious diseases often remain the most common cause of mortality in zoo animals (Scaglione et al 2019 ).…”
