Growing public awareness of the environmental impact of coal combustion has raised serious concerns about the various hazardous trace elements produced by coal firing. Arsenic deserves special attention due to its toxicity, volatility, bioaccumulation in the environment, and potential carcinogenic properties. As the main anthropogenic source of arsenic is coal combustion, its behavior in power plants is of concern. Unlike mercury, arsenic behavior in coal combustion has not been subjected to systematic, in-depth research. Different researchers have reached opposing conclusions about the behavior of arsenic in combustion systems and as yet there is relatively little research on arsenic-removal technologies. In this paper, the volatilization, transformation, and emission behavior of arsenic and its removal technologies are discussed in depth. Factors affecting the volatilization characteristics of arsenic are summarized, including temperature, pressure, mode of occurrence of arsenic, coal rank, mineral matter, and the sulfur and chlorine content of the fuel. The behavior of arsenic during oxy-fuel combustion and the effect of combustion atmosphere (O2, CO2, SO2 and H2O(g)) are also reviewed in detail. In order to better understand the pathway of arsenic in a power plant environment, a particular focus in this work is the transformation mechanism of ultra-fine ash particles and the partitioning behavior of arsenic. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the bounded fractions of arsenic (As), physicochemical parameters, and mineral composition of solid matrices of coal mining area of Pakistan. Clay, sand, and soil samples were collected from different depths of blocks 3 and 5 of Thar coalfield. The As bounded with different chemical fractions of solid matrices was extracted by sequential extraction scheme, proposed by the Community Bureau of Reference protocol (BCR). Certified reference material and spiking tests were performed to check the accuracy of methodology. Extracted As fractions from all studied solid material by sequential extraction method were measured by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. Mineral composition has been determined by scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. All the three solid samples obtained from both blocks varied in their physicochemical parameters and As contents in different chemical forms. The total As and extractable As concentration in block 3 was higher as compared to block 5. The recovery and standard deviation between total As and ∑(1–4) fractions in all studied samples were obtained as >95% and <5%, respectively. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 36: 1667–1675, 2017

Among coal-producing countries, China has witnessed the highest frequency and severity of coal fires. During mining in the re-mining face and the lower part of the thick coal seam (or coal seam group), second or multiple oxidations of the residual coal can readily occur in mined-out areas, severely increasing the risk of coal fires. The study of multiple oxidations of coal aids in the early detection of spontaneous combustion of remaining coal in the mined-out areas. The characteristics of coal fires are demonstrated using fresh coal samples (first-oxidized coal) and oxidized coal samples (second-oxidized coal) from four different ranks of coals. Proximate and elemental analysis, Fourier transform spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry were adopted to investigate the quality, microcharacteristics, characteristic temperatures, and apparent activation energy of second-oxidized coal. In addition, the effect of spontaneous combustion at heating rates of 5.0, 10.0, and 15.0°C min -1 was studied. Compared with the four samples of first-oxidized coal, those of second-oxidized coals cause fire easily under the same conditions.
