Monitoring microstructural variations of fresh skeletal muscle tissues by Mueller matrix imaging

Abstract: Recently many attempts have been made for extracting the structural information of myofibrils as indicators for diseases of skeletal muscle. In this paper we adopt wide-field illumination and take the backscattering Mueller matrix images of bovine skeletal muscle tissues during the 24-hour experimental time after the animal's death. The 2D images of Mueller matrix elements and their frequency distribution histograms (FDHs) reveal rich qualitative information on the changes in the microstructures of the skeleta… Show more

“…However, it should be pointed out that the m 12 , m 13 , m 21 and m 31 elements of the ITB tissues show some slightly larger values compared with the CD tissues. It suggests that the ITB tissues may contain some cylindrical scatterers according to our previous studies . The Mueller matrix images shown in Figure demonstrate some structural differences between the CD and ITB tissues.…”

“…The Mueller matrix derived parameters of clear associations with certain structural features have been demonstrated to be potentially useful for some diagnostic purposes . For instance, we preliminarily applied the Mueller matrix microscope and MMT parameters to the pathological detections and staging of human breast duct carcinoma , liver cancer and cirrhosis , thyroid cancer , skin cancer , cervical cancer , and so on . The results showed that the microscopic Mueller matrix derived parameters are powerful indicators to describe the structural features of different pathological samples quantitatively.…”

“…The MMEs encode rich information about the tissue. For example, m 22 [22]. We can determine the axis direction of aligned fibers through the signs and intensities of m 12 and m 13 [23], and the direction of optical axis through those of m 24 and m 34 , similarly.…”
