Monitoring influenza vaccination coverage and acceptance among health-care workers in German hospitals – results from three seasons

Abstract: Health-care workers are an important vaccination target group, they are more frequently exposed to infectious diseases and can contribute to nosocomial infections. We established a country-wide online monitoring system to estimate influenza vaccine uptake and its determinants among German hospital staff (OKaPII). The online questionnaire included items on vaccination behavior and reasons for and against influenza vaccination. After a pilot phase in 2016, a country-wide roll-out was performed in 2017. “…In Germany, influenza vaccination is recommended to all HCW (38). In our survey only 60% followed that recommendation, yet this rate was still higher than in some other published surveys in HCW (38,39). This suggests a large-scale general vaccine acceptance in participating HCW which is in line with the observed general trust in vaccines, their efficacy, and the high agreement with the statement to keep vaccinations up to date.…”

“…Experience with other well-established vaccination programs can also provide guidance for COVID-19 vaccination, e.g., the motivation for the seasonal influenza vaccination (SIV) has been studied for a long time, but mainly among HCWs. Self-protection was the most common motive for SIV in a country-wide study among 27,163 German HCWs from 171 hospitals in the influenza season 2018/2019 [ 27 ], as well as among HCWs of UHO in the season 2020/2021 [ 28 ]. In the case of vaccination against COVID-19, self-protection appears to be a weaker motive now then during the pandemic.…”
